Why are people protesting: Insights “Peru”

At least 40 people lost their lives in clashes between demonstrators and Peruvian security forces. This can be called the bloodiest crisis and violence in the Andean nation in recent back two decades. The demands are very clear they want elections and new administration.

The Andean nation has been rocked by intermittent protests since last year, 2022, when Peru's parliament failed to impeach former President Pedro Castillo. In December 2022, after the ouster and detention of Castillo, the most violent protests to date took place. The repressive response to demonstrations by Castillo's replacement, Dina Boluarte, has added fuel to the flames.

Let’s see what the condition of PERU is.

The incident is like this- On 7 December 2022, President Pedro Castillo faced impeachment by Congress. However, he was arrested last night on charges of corruption and a failed "coup".

The leftists lost efforts to retain power. Civilians and the military left their side in the journey. Castillo was sentenced to 18 months pre-trial imprisonment on a charge of insurrection.

His previous vice-president Dina Boluarte took his place, though let me tell you Many Peruvians do not consider Bolluarte a  real president. Peruvians want to choose their leader through a new election.

But the notable point is that Boluarte is not ready to resign. She was saying that the new election happens in 2024, but the protesters are on the road to the will, of immediate election!

So the government is taking it as a challenge and wants to suppress it to save the power to rule. Boluaarte is increasing the force and attacking the protesters. With every passing day the violence in protest is a topic to be enlightened. Till now around 50 civilians were lost their lives in hope of getting a chance to breathe in their own elected government.

Where is the Human Rights now?

Though many Human rights groups have complained against the Boluarte administration. They claimed that the government of Peru is using excessive force to suppress the demonstrations.

Executive director of Amnesty International Peru  Marina Navarro said that the escalation of violence in Peru cannot be tolerated. State brutality against protesters and the loss of human life are complicating the situation.

You will remember December 14 when Peru declared a national emergency. At this time they were free to use force and yes it was indicating the will of the government regarding the protests and the protestors!

The government wanted to end it by any means.

In South America one of the most popular tourist destinations in Peru. But the protests delayed many tourists and almost brought the tourism business to a standstill. This led to a further decline in GDP.

A country that needs the attention of the world's human rights advocates, Peru is on the verge of a political revolution. The source of mass hunger is unimaginable poverty.
