Launch of Twitter Blue for Android Devices with $11/month Subscription
Twitter Inc. announced on Wednesday that it would charge $11 per month for the Twitter Blue membership for Android users, the same as it does for iOS users, while also providing a lower annual plan for web users compared to monthly fees.
The blue check mark, which was previously only
available to verified accounts of journalists, public figures, and renowned
people, will soon be available to anyone willing to pay.
It was introduced a year ago to support
Twitter's income growth as owner Elon Musk battles to keep advertisers.
Twitter announced on its website that Google's
Android users would be able to purchase a monthly membership to Twitter Blue
for $11, the same pricing as for Apple's iOS customers.
Similar to Apple's App Store, the higher
prices for Android users are probably intended to cover the costs.
The yearly Blue subscription plan, which was
only offered online, cost $84, which was less than the $8 monthly subscription
fee. An inquiry on Twitter's price policy for Android was not answered.
According to Twitter, the discount for web
users would be available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom,
Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
Earlier in December, Musk stated that Twitter
will provide a higher tier without adverts by the following year, and that the
social media platform's standard blue tick will have half as many ads.
