Turkey ready to host talks for Sudan, says Erdogan
The President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, has said that his country is ready to host comprehensive talks for
Sudan if the two parties agree.
Erdogan held a telephone conversation with Sudan's Sovereign
Council chairman. The Turkish president told Abdel Fattah al Burhan, a Sudanese
army general, on Tuesday, that Turkey would continue its efforts to establish
peace and security in Sudan.
Turkey’s Communications Directorate said in a statement that
the Turkish president would help the Sudanese people. Turkey would work with
the United Nations to ensure that urgent humanitarian aid is sent to Sudan.
The Turkish President also expressed concern over the
increase in casualties in the war-torn Sudan. He also discussed the security of
Turkish citizens in Sudan.
The fight between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary
Rapid Support Forces erupted in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, in mid-April
after months of escalating tensions between the two groups. The battle has
already killed hundreds and injured thousands.
Since April 15, at least 600 civilians have been killed and
more than 2,560 people have been wounded. The conflict between the two Sudanese
rivals has now engulfed large parts of Sudan. Sudan’s Doctors Syndicate has
also expressed concern about the situation.
According to the United Nations, five million people in
Sudan will require emergency assistance because of the ongoing conflict between
the two Sudanese groups.
According to the UN, the number of internally displaced
people in Sudan has increased to more than 700,000. Air strikes have also
continued in the capital Khartoum.
International Organization for Migration spokesperson said,
“The number of people internally displaced in Sudan has more than doubled in
the last week.” Paul Dillon expressed concern about the current situation in
Sudan at a Geneva press conference. World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic also expressed
sadness and concern about the situation.
