List of key events: Deadly clashes in Sudan enter 19th day

A significant humanitarian crisis has been unfolding in Sudan amid violent clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary force.

Here is the situation on May 3, Wednesday.

Fighting and Ceasefire

·         The two warring parties in Sudan have agreed to a new and longer truce of seven days from Thursday, neighbour and mediator South Sudan announced.

·         Despite several ceasefires previously agreed between the groups, witnesses have repeatedly raised concerns over air raids and shootings.

·         Beyond the capital, Khartoum, instability has also been experienced by residents of the Darfur region from where over 70% of the 330,000 people displaced inside the country by the conflict have fled.

·         In El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, a bit of normalcy was witnessed as markets reopened and residents cautiously restarted their lives, according to local reports.

Humanitarian Situation

·         Doctors Without Borders said it had delivered some relief supplies from Port Sudan to the capital, a road journey of roughly 800 km.

·         550 people have been killed in the fighting so far, with 4,926 injured, Sudan's health ministry reported Tuesday.

·         A Sudanese physician, Howida Elhassan, raised concerns over a lack of medical staff and equipment amid the clashes in a video on social media. A surge of wounded civilians is posing immense difficulties for medical staff at several hospitals.
