Sixth edition of Fawanees gets underway in Saudi Arabia’s Mecca

The sixth edition of the Fawanees event started on Tuesday evening in Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It will run until April 15. It is being held in cooperation with the Saudi Ministry of Culture under the Ramadan Season Calendar.

Local people, travellers and pilgrims participated in the event. The event was inaugurated by Ismat Abdul-Karim Maatouq, secretary-general of the Mecca Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The event features entertainment, commercial activities, fun activities and daily competitions to win prizes. Saudi companies and institutions promoting products, services and unique activities have provided support to the event for the holy month of Ramadan.

The event helped local entrepreneurs, craftspeople and family businesses in Saudi Arabia to promote their products and services to tourists and pilgrims.

According to Arab News, Maatouq said, “The Fawanees event provides participants and visitors with the opportunity to experience Ramadan.” He noted that Fawanees was launched in 2018 during the holy month of Ramadan. The second edition of the event welcomed 30,000 visitors.

Maatouq also revealed that the Fawanees event was never cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reportedly, the digital version of the event took place during COVID-19. The fourth edition of the event took place in a hybrid version.

This year in Ramadan, Saudi female security personnel received Umrah pilgrims and managed the crowds of visitors. For the first time in the history of Saudi Arabia, Saudi women were seen organising the Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the Kingdom’s Director of Public Security Lieutenant General Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Bassami, women helped to control the crowd and managed people who travelled to the Kingdom to undertake Umrah.

Muslims come to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to undertake Umrah in the Grand Mosque. This year, over  800,000 Muslims from other countries registered for undertaking Umrah in the Kingdom.
