As Israel and Palestine clash, the EU asks for caution and calm

Josep Borrell, the head of the EU's foreign policy, denounced the rising violence between Israel and the Palestinians on Saturday and urged all sides to use moderation and foster peace in advance of the on-going religious holidays.

After an Italian tourist was killed and five people were injured in a car ramming in Tel Aviv on Friday, after a gun incident in the occupied West Bank that killed two Israeli sisters, tensions between Israel and the Palestinians grew.

Israel is entitled to self-defense. Any answer, though, must be appropriate. The EU demands that the current violence halt immediately. Everything must be done to stop the situation from escalating, according to a statement from Borrell.

In order to prevent further escalation and to foster peace during the ongoing holy holidays, he urged all parties to display the greatest amount of moderation.

This month marks the observance of the Christian Easter, the Jewish Passover, and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
