Iran to take strict actions against women without hijab

The Islamic Republic of Iran is set to take strict actions against Iranian women without hijab and arrest women who ignore wearing the mandatory hijab from next weekend.

The Ministry of the Interior of Iran called on people to reprimand women without hijabs. Iranian police announced th
e use of video surveillance to identify women who violate the mandatory hijab rules.

Alireza Ghasemi Farzad, the governor of Hamadan Province of Iran, announced that "banks and public offices" would not provide services to women who do not wear hijabs. He called on “non-governmental organisations to help enforce hijab” across the country.

Iranian authorities reportedly said that women’s acts of civil disobedience damaged Iran's spiritual image and increased insecurity in the country. The latest move would penalise women who refuse to wear a hijab.

The Tehran Metro Company said that the authorities would stop women from passing through the ticket barrier without wearing a hijab. Masoud Darshti, the chief executive of Tehran and Suburbs Metro Operation Company, said that women must wear hijabs to use the Tehran metro.

Under new plans, women who violate the rules can face penalties. Iranian authorities will impose fines of 1m tomans on women for not complying with the rules. Women will also be taken to the court.

In Iran, all women and girls over the age of 9 must wear hijabs. They are required to wear loose-fitting trousers under their coats. They cannot show their body, especially in public places.

After the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022, Iranian women no longer want to submit to the strict dress codes and mandatory hijab policy. They have demanded an end to the hijab law. Many women have started to go out in public without veils. However, the authorities have repeatedly warned them to respect the dress codes and wear the hijab.
