UN Security Council adopts resolution in support of agreement between US and Taliban
The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously
adopted a resolution in support of a peace agreement between the United States
and the radical Taliban movement, as well as with the possibility of reviewing
the sanctions against the country.
"The Security Council welcomes
significant steps towards ending the war and making intra-Afghan negotiations
possible through the adoption of the Joint Declaration of the IRA (Islamic The Republic of Iran) and the United States on Peace in Afghanistan and on the
Peace Agreement in Afghanistan between the United States and the Taliban, - noted in the text of the resolution. It
also refers to the readiness of the Council with the start of intra-Afghan
negotiations to consider the possibility of "reviewing the status of
individuals, groups and enterprises included in the sanctions ion list SB ".
"This step of signing the agreement gives us hope for the best, but this is only the beginning," said Charity Norman Chalet, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She promised that the United States will continue efforts to achieve stability in Afghanistan. “We hope that you will join us,” she turned to her colleagues in the Security Council.
British Permanent Representative Karen Pierce
called the agreement between the US and the Taliban "a significant step
towards peace in Afghanistan." Like
her American counterpart, she cautioned against "creating parallel power
structures in Afghanistan."
On February 29,
a peace agreement was signed in Doha between the United States and the radical
Taliban. According to the agreements,
the United States, its allies and the coalition intend to withdraw all troops
from Afghanistan within 14 months. In
addition, Washington pledged to promote the removal of the Taliban from the UN
sanctions list by May, and by August to abolish US restrictive measures against
them.
