Trump is considering a full pardon for Flynn
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is
seriously considering a presidential pardon for his former National Security
Assistant Michael Flynn. He posted the
corresponding message on Sunday on his Twitter page.
"Well, now they report that after they
destroyed his life and the life of his wonderful family (as well as the lives
of many others), the FBI, which works with the Department of Justice,"
lost "documents relating to General Michael Flynn. How convenient. I’m seriously considering the
possibility of a complete pardon, "said the head of the White House.
Back
in February, Trump announced that he had not yet thought about pardoning a
number of his associates who were in the dock.
It was, in particular, about Flynn, whose sentence should be imposed
soon.
In
February, Flynn's lawyers asked the court to sentence their client to probation
and community service. In early January,
the prosecution requested him to be imprisoned for up to six months. The sentencing was scheduled for February 27 and then was postponed indefinitely.
The Flynn case
is being examined as part of an investigation of Russian-attributed
interference with the US presidential election in 2016. In February 2018, Flynn was forced to resign
due to the fact that he did not fully inform Vice President Michael Pence about
his conversations with Sergey Kislyak, who at that time was the Russian
ambassador to the United States. Trump
and his key assistants have repeatedly rejected suspicions of any unlawful
contacts with Russian officials during the 2016 election campaign. Moscow has also repeatedly called unfounded
allegations of attempts to influence the course of the US presidential
election.
