Palestinian killed by Israeli troops in West Bank firefight
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, an Israeli soldier was murdered by a Palestinian during a gunfight on Wednesday in the occupied West Bank.
After Israel conducted an arrest raid on a camp for refugees close to the city of Tubas, fighting broke out. In the course of a months-long campaign against Palestinian militants, the Israeli military claimed to have conducted arrest raids throughout the West Bank.
It claimed that while apprehending a wanted individual in the Faraa refugee camp in the northern West Bank, its soldiers came under fire.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Younis Ghassan Tayeh, 21, passed away after being shot in the chest. It wasn't immediately obvious if he was taking part in the fighting with Israeli troops.
Since a wave of fatal attacks against Israelis earlier this year that claimed 19 lives, Israel has been conducting almost daily arrest raids in the West Bank.
During that time, dozens of Palestinians have died, many of them militants or participants in violence. However, there have also been fatalities among civilians, including one who unintentionally drove through a combat area.
In May, a seasoned Al Jazeera reporter who was reporting the operations was also slain.
Israel said on Monday that Shireen Abu Akleh, an Al Jazeera journalist, had been fatally shot during a raid and that there was a "high likelihood" an Israeli soldier had killed her inadvertently.
She was immediately identifiable as a member of the media thanks to her vest and helmet.
According to Israel, the goal of the arrest raids is to destroy militant networks that have established themselves. According to the Palestinians, these activities are intended to uphold Israel's 55-year military occupation of the areas where they demand a sovereign state.
In the 1967 Middle East conflict, Israel took
the West Bank, along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, and the
Palestinians wanted those areas for a future state.
