EU assists Palestinian refugees in Syria

In order to assist Palestinian refugees in Syria, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have come to a significant strategic collaboration.

The EU gave €2 million to UNRWA's Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan Emergency Appeal 2022 (Syria Appeal) in order to provide aid to Palestinian refugees who were displaced by war.

With the help of this funding, the Agency was able to support its overall mission of providing 148 022 of the most vulnerable Palestine refugees—59% of whom were women—with emergency monetary assistance to fulfill their basic requirements, including food, housing, and warmth. 36,003 of the most vulnerable Palestinian refugees got aid over a four-month period as a result of this particular contribution.

As the Syrian crisis enters its 13th year, millions of people have been displaced, and the situation is still tight and unstable. Thus, EU cooperation is necessary to keep giving much needed aid to Palestine refugees affected by the crisis.

Amanya Michael-Ebye, the director of UNRWA affairs in Syria, expressed his gratitude for the support by saying: “Due to donors like the EU, we continue to make a crucial contribution to defending the most vulnerable Palestine refugees by giving them essential humanitarian assistance. The continuous support of the European Union to UNRWA activities remains crucial to help mitigate some of the terrible effects of the conflict, particularly in connection to the most vulnerable Palestine refugees, as Syrians experience the greatest economic crisis since the conflict began. Unrwa's cash assistance program continues to be a cornerstone of the organization's emergency response.”
