The Wuhan coronavirus has so far caused 106 deaths, including 100 in the Hubei province. These are the latest updates provided by the Chinese authorities, according to which almost 1,300 new cases of infection have been recorded. In addition, the new cases are 1291 pushing the total worldwide with the involvement of a dozen countries (most recently also Germany), over 4000. In Hubei only there were 2714 cases, of which 2,567 were treated with hospitalization and 47 in the meantime discharged after the relative treatment. So far, 30 Chinese cities and provinces have launched the 'level1' alert on the response to the coronavirus emergency, while Hong Kong has decided the "highest level" of response to the crisis.

China has decided to postpone sine die the beginning of the second semester for schools and universities in efforts to contain the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic. The Ministry of Education, with students in the midst of the Lunar New Year holidays, did not provide any further details. Universities and educational institutions "under the auspices of the Ministry of Education must postpone the opening of the spring semester adequately", the ministry explained in a statement. Students who "return from their homes after the Lunar New Year celebrations must not return to their institution without special authorization".

There is a first confirmed case of Chinese coronavirus in Germany, in the south-eastern state of Bavaria. The Bavarian Ministry of Health announced: "A man from the Starnberg area was infected with the new virus and was placed under medical supervision and isolation". A spokesman for the ministry said.

The Hong Kong team of experts led by Gabriel Leung, Dean of the Hong Kong University medical school, estimates the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in 5 Chinese megacities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chongqing between the end of April and early May. In Chongqing only, which has over 30 million inhabitants, there may be 150.000 new cases a day due to the high volumes of the population travel to Wuhan.

Today the World Health Organization stated that the global risk from the Chinese coronavirus is high, admitting an error in its previous reports in which it reported that the risk was moderate. The latest report by the UN body, released on Sunday evening, revealed a risk "very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level". In a note, the UN added that in previous days communications it had been said: "incorrectly" that the risk was "moderate”.
