The sports minister of Iran was sanctioned by the European
Union in January over the death of a young woman in police custody in the
country.
In recent months, the European Union and the United States
imposed sanctions on many Iranians and entities in Iran over the death of a
22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. The EU and the US accused Iran of
violently suppressing protests in the Islamic Republic sparked by the death of
Amini.
Recently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the
United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog, said that Iran was also planning a
massive expansion of its enrichment capacity at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment
Plant (FFEP). Western countries condemned Iran’s latest action to further
expand its nuclear programme.
