Iranian politicians turning to Syria to improve economic ties


Iran is looking at expanding its economic opportunity in the Middle East and in its pursuits, Syria is the one it is targeting at early stages. Given the fact that both the countries are severely under economic depression, Iran has decided to come up with strategies to promote healthier economic ties.

Towards efforts to better economic ties, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Syria on Tuesday to discuss the expansion of the economic cooperation between Tehran and Damascus.

He will be meeting with the top political ladder of the country and discuss future possibilities. Ahead of flying to Syria, the Iranian leader said that he is visiting Syria on formal invitation of Syrian leadership and will be going ahead with talks regarding mutual cooperation in the region.

The speaker also talked about why Syria is so important to Iran. He said, “Syria is the closest area to Iran that can provide access to the European markets and the Mediterranean, creating a lot of opportunities that favor industrial, agricultural, and tourism capacities as well as favoring cooperation in the area of oil.”

The speaker also hoped that through this visit, other areas are also moving towards improvement. This includes political and cultural relations, stressed Qalibaf while discussing future prospects with Iranina and Syrian businessmen. Other than that, the leader also credited Syrian government for successfully tackling the threats it faced due to the terror group Daesh.

He highlighted the various efforts being made to bring back stability to the Syrian economy saying that the country is slowly moving towards economic development. He attended a press conference after arriving in Damascus and Speaker of the People’s Assembly of Syria Hamoudah Sabbaq was also present there.

They both stressed on a joint cooperation agreement prepared keeping the interests of both the nations in mind. He concluded his address to the media by congratulating Syria for conducting successful elections that guaranteed another seven year Presidential term for Bashar al-Assad.
