Call for joining international efforts to counter Muslim Brotherhood

The increasing influence of Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab region and Western countries has posed a grave threat to the efforts of establishing global peace and harmony. Labelled as a terrorist organization by the United States in April 2019, the Muslim Brotherhood has been carrying out terror activities and extremist movements across the Middle East and other regions across the world.

Under the alias of a charity and social care organization, the Muslim Brotherhood has gained political and moral support from some countries, particularly Qatar. After the 2013 uprising in Egypt, the terrorist organization and its institutions have been receiving increasing financial support from Qatari institutions and other sponsors to carry out its extremist activities in different parts of the world.

Qatar involvement in terror-financing

According to a 2020 report by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR), Qatar has a major role in financing Muslim Brotherhood and other extremist groups. The report revealed that Doha funneled millions of euros through the Qatar Charity (QC) to administer more than 140 projects across Europe, many of which are related to organizations associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. Over recent years, several reports have emerged indicating Qatar's support and engagement with Muslim Brotherhood and its development in the Middle east.

A report by English Daily The Times exposed Qatar's continuous funding to the Muslim Brotherhood as it revealed details of money trails from Qatari banks to the terror organization. Reportedly, the MB is using these funds to carry out its terror activities in various regions.

In the report, The Times stated that Qatari-owned Al Rayan Bank has been providing banking services to Muslim Brotherhood in the United Kingdom. In Switzerland, Qatar's various network members have been transferring millions of euros from Qatari banks to the terrorist organization.

Last year, a French senator called on the United Nations and international banking institutions to investigate how Qatari terror financier Khalifa al-Subaiy received banking services from the state-owned Qatar National Bank (ONB).

Need for joining global efforts

As the Muslim Brotherhood continues to take refuge in Doha, the Qatari government will continue to assist in whitewashing the terror image of the organization in the Middle East and other countries, such as Britain and France.

For years now, Arab nations have been fighting a long battle against Muslim Brotherhood's activities and efforts aimed at creating tension in the region. The terrorist organization has regularly targeted the military, tourists and other communities to fulfill its agenda. Therefore, it is high time for world governments, particularly the European Union, to take serious cognizance of the looming concerns about the Brotherhood's action and stand in solidarity with Arab nations' efforts to stop the expansion of the group in the West.

Understanding the level of global threat, it has become critical for world governments and international institutions to coordinate necessary measures to launch judicial investigations into the funding's, plans and activities of the Muslim Brotherhood as well as those governments and entities that are sponsoring funds to its institutions. It is the need of the hour for joining international efforts to not only stop foreign funding to the organization, but also to counter its terror activities.
