Climate change makes it to the priority list of EU and UN

With global warming reaching an alarming point, and as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “point of no return”, fighting climate change becomes the priority for the leaders holding the reigns of the European Union and United Nations.

On Sunday, the European Union’s new leadership took charge of the office, laying out the key goals for the Union. Strengthening the unity of the bloc, fighting recession forces and mitigating climate change was among the top issues. The other challenges encircling the 28-member union included the Brexit split with Britain and tremors rising from tariff tiff between China and the United States.

On the same day, in Spain, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed similar concerns for employing adequate methods to turn the climate change game. Guterres said that the world’s efforts to combat climate change have been “utterly inadequate”.

Guterres's climate change awareness speech came ahead of the two-week international climate conference in Madrid, starting on Monday. The UN chief told reporters, “The point of no return is no longer over the horizon. It is insight and hurtling toward us.

”He added that there is enough scientific data for us to realize the impact and cause of rising mercury levels and even the technical solutions to limit it but “what is lacking is political will.

”In Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative Josep Borrell, the new College of European Commissioners assumed office on December 1. The new leadership gathered as a mark of new beginnings and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the latest European treaty. EU leaders vouched to be the guardians of the European Union treaties.

Von der Leyen said, "It is a responsibility towards the European people and towards our founding father and mothers, but it is also a responsibility towards our children.

"She added, "It is our responsibility to leave a union that is stronger than the one we inherited: ... a continent in peace with rights and liberties (and) a single market with unprecedented economic opportunities.

"The Sunday ceremony came ahead of the European Parliament session, to be held on December 11. It is said to be EU leaders summit aimed to submit the commission's first climate proposals, called the "Green New Deal"
