Eritrean Community in UAE Celebrates Culture and Unity at Annual Festival

The Eritrean community in the United Arab Emirates came together from January 24 to 26 to celebrate their rich heritage and strengthen communal bonds at their annual festival. Held under the theme “Peace Anchored on Resilience,” the festival was a vibrant showcase of Eritrean culture, traditions, and unity.

A Celebration of Heritage and Community

The festival featured a diverse range of activities, catering to all age groups. Sports competitions drew the participation of approximately 130 children, fostering a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. The event also included photo exhibitions curated by Eritrean communities in Dubai and North Emirates, offering a glimpse into the country’s history and traditions.

Adding to the cultural experience, displays of traditional household materials and clothing provided attendees with a deeper connection to their roots. A dedicated children’s village ensured that younger participants could engage in interactive and educational activities. Meanwhile, cultural and artistic performances brought the vibrant energy of Eritrean music and dance to life, leaving attendees with a profound sense of national pride.

Strengthening Cultural Identity

Speaking at the event, Mr. Omar Mahmud, Chairman of the Eritrean Community in North Emirates, highlighted the significance of such festivals in maintaining Eritrean identity among children born in the Diaspora. “National festivals are essential in introducing our children to their heritage and values,” he emphasized. He also encouraged increased participation to expand the festival’s reach and ensure its continuity.

Similarly, Mr. Alamin Ali Mohammed, Chairman of the Eritrean Community in Dubai, reinforced the importance of these gatherings in uniting the community and preserving cultural traditions for future generations.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The festival’s opening ceremony was graced by notable figures, including Ms. Seida Mohammed Taha, Administrator of the Eritrean Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Mohammed Mahmud Selim, Administrator of the Eritrean Charge d’Affaires in Dubai and North Emirates, and Mr. Tesfu Gebretensae, Head of Community and Public Affairs in the UAE. Their presence underscored the Eritrean government’s commitment to supporting and engaging with its expatriate communities.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Eritrean community festival in the UAE reflects the strong bonds among Eritreans living abroad and their unwavering commitment to preserving their culture. As Mr. Omar Mahmud noted, ongoing efforts to enhance and expand such initiatives will play a crucial role in fostering unity and ensuring that Eritrean traditions continue to thrive across generations.

With each passing year, the festival serves as a reminder that cultural heritage is not just about the past—it is a living, evolving connection that strengthens communities and builds bridges across borders.
