Elon Musk invited to testify in the European Union Parliament
Tesla and Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, has been invited by the
head of the European Parliament to testify before the legislature. The
parliament's speaker, Roberta Metsola, has sent a letter to Musk, asking him to
appear in front of lawmakers.
Musk’s response was not immediately known. However, the
European Parliament cannot force him to turn up in order to testify before the
lawmakers.
Metsola reportedly wrote, "Twitter should not
unwittingly become a catalyst for hate speech, election interference and
misinformation." Metsola was referring to a recent incident where Twitter
suspended the accounts of prominent journalists.
According to POLITICO, Metsola asked the tech billionaire to
appear for a "frank exchange in public.” Metsola said that she was
"confident" that Musk would agree to accept the invitation.
Musk struck various controversies since taking over Twitter
in October for $44 billion. He attracted condemnation from policymakers in the
United States (US) and Europe due to various changes he brought to the social
media company.
After taking over Twitter, Musk sacked almost half of the
company's staff, reinstated former US president Donald Trump's account on
Twitter, dropped off a policy against Covid-19 misinformation, and suspended
accounts of prominent celebrities. His latest attempt to suspend accounts of
journalists did not go well with the EU.
The UN and EU slammed Musk for suspending the accounts of
journalists. However, Musk accused some journalists of sharing the live
location of his private jet. However, the accounts of those journalists were
restored after severe backlash from various prominent organisations.
On Monday, Twitter users also voted that the tech
billionaire should resign as Twitter CEO. Musk asked millions of users,
"Should I step down as head of Twitter?"
Musk is also no longer the richest person in the world. He
lost his title to Bernard Arnault because Musk’s net worth dropped this year.
