Dynamics change in Yemen’s Hodeidah port, UN urges for a meet

The United Nations has finally interfered in the complicated matter of Yemen’s Hodeidah port after it notices some changes in the front end leaders of the region.

On Monday, one of the monitoring missions of the body called on fresh talks over Hodeidah as the Saudi-led coalition strafed areas south of the port city, which is the same place Iran-backed Hothi fighters moved forward after withdrawing from the coalition. This after a long matter of peace, which was last agreed in 2018, that the air strikes began on Sunday.

As per the statement given by the coalition, they have reportedly carried out 11 operations under the Stockholm pact’s guidelines of the areas that could be covered. This has been done to reaffirm the support to the west coast forces, stressed the Saudi state media. The problem primarily arose when Houthi fighters clashed with the Yemeni coalition inHays district.

To discuss the matter at an open forum, the UN mission that is incharge of overseeing the pact, stressed the withdrawal of joint Yemeni forces from Hodeidah city, al-Durayhimi, Bayt al Faqih and parts of al-Tahita along with subsequent Houthi takeover  as they felt it was a major shift in front lines.

The UN body also said that due to this shift, nearly 700 families were asked to leave for Al-Khokhah and some 180 families were required to move further south to Al-Mokha, which was also under the control of the coalition. Tihama fighters did not like the confrontation and said that the withdrawal was unjustified.

However, this pull back needed some clarity from the UN as it is still not finalised as to whether it was linked to the redeployment in South Yemen, which was earlier described by the Saudi-led coalition. The ground realities reveal that it was, in fact, the Saudi military that had left the main base in Aden.
